Candice Shoemaker
Professor of Horticulture and Human Health
Kansas State University

Candice Shoemaker, professor of horticulture and human health at Kansas State University will moderate the session and provide an introduction of how horticulture contributes to healthy communities from real-estate values, crime reduction, tourism, food security, etc. 

Katherine Kelly
Executive Director & Co-Founder of Cultivate KC
Kansas City, MO

Katherine Kelly is Executive Director and Co-Founder of Cultivate KC, a nonprofit working to grow food, farms, and community in support of a sustainable and healthy local food system for all. Katherine will share how Cultivate KC has been a leader in developing the urban food system through offering a diversified set of programs focusing on farm business development, local food access, and community engagement in food and agriculture issues. She’ll speak to the power of developing farmers as community leaders, educators, and advocates and the power of offering new models to improve the quality of life in urban neighborhoods.

Teresia Hazen
Horticultural Therapy Program and Therapeutic Gardens
Legacy Health, Portland, Oregon

Teresia Hazen, a registered horticultural therapist, is responsible for the horticultural therapy program and therapeutic gardens for Legacy Health in Portland, OR. The gardens offer supportive environments not only for the healthcare patients, families, visitors and staff, but also the community and surrounding neighbors. Teresia will share how these groups served plus volunteers and HT interns benefit from the hospital garden experience through the seasons. Workplace wellness is a major part of the HTR role at Legacy where she collaborates with Employee Health and initiatives supporting healthy eating, active living and peaceful mind through gardens, nature and horticulture. HTRs are essential workers during COVID-19.  She will share how Legacy promotes the gardens for destressing during the pandemic for all people on the 6-hospital campuses.
